529 - Practical Nursing Certificate

Admissions Requirements: High school Algebra and Biology, and recommended Chemistry or TEAS scores of. Applicants must submit official high school transcripts or GED test results. Applicants should submit official college transcripts if they have taken college level courses. An applicant’s acceptance at the college level will be an admissions determination; acceptance into the Practical Nursing Certificate Program will be determined by the chair of the Nursing Academic Department.

Additional Program Requirements: The nursing program at Alfred State involves learning and demonstration of accomplishment of objectives in the cognitive, affective, psychomotor, social, and spiritual domains. Clinical experience is an integral part of the program. Students gain nursing knowledge and practice expertise while giving individualized care to a variety of clients. It is essential that students are able to fully participate in clinical, caring for clients as assigned. As a minimum, established entrance and on-going requirements for nursing students include being able to:

• Ambulate in a sufficient manner to appropriately and safely perform patient care.

• Lift at least 35 pounds.

• Function in a safe manner, not placing clients in jeopardy.

• Maintain confidentiality in regard to professional practice.

• Appropriately use standard medical equipment.

• Interpret data from electronic devices in a health care setting for the purpose of client care.

• Maintain professional composure at all times.

• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
