Sonographic Procedures II Lab

Allied Health School of Arts and Sciences

Course Description

This hands-on lab course provides students with practical experience in performing gynecologic and obstetric sonographic examinations. Students learn proper patient preparation, positioning, and transducer selection for evaluating the non-pregnant and pregnant female pelvis using both transabdominal and transvaginal techniques. Emphasis is placed on recognizing the normal anatomy, obtaining required protocol images for each trimester, and performing standard obstetric measurements. Using transvaginal female pelvis and second-trimester OB scanning phantoms, students refine their scan techniques and develop the ability to adjust ultrasound instrumentation for optimal image quality. Additionally, students gain experience in clinical documentation, infection control, and quality assurance protocols. As part of their training, students have the opportunity to practice obstetric sonographic scan techniques on pregnant community volunteers who kindly donate their time for educational purposes.
